Well, Dragomir's makes Niles' look like a walk in the park, but here it is ; again, not necessary, but additional. This is more of a "what Niles' everyday life was like until he was reassigned" sort of thing, rather than a one-time event :D;

Title: Niles Backstory

Rating: PG-13 for mental abuse
Warnings: mental abuse, light physical abuse, a bleak outlook on life

Niles gets up early in the morning, he has to get up extra early or he might get punished for being late. He gets ready quickly, paying attention to the details of his dress but not to what he eats. He has to look good, or else the Lt. Colonel might hit him for not looking presentable, like he had last week, when Niles' ribbon had been fraying a little at the end. He drives to work without much thought to it; he's more worried about what's going to happen when he gets to work. Remember, he tells himself, he needs to finish that report on that conspiricy first thing, then fetch more ink and paper from the wearhouse, and then rewrite the reports that the 2nd Lieutenant had torn up yesterday because he wasn't writing them neat enough. He arrives just as he finishes going through the things he needs to do, and, with a deep breath, gets out and goes inside.

When he arrives, the Lt. Colonel is already there, but the 1st and 2nd Lietuenants have not arrived yet. He bows low and waits before rising and hurrying to his desk and getting out the paperwork he needs to finish. He doesn't like being alone with the Lt. Colonel, he doesn't like the way he looks at him, but he's not sure why, and he's pretty sure that it's his fault, anyway. Still, it's hard to work when he can feel the Lt. Colonel's eyes on him, and it makes his writing get more cramped and slanted. He tries not to notice when he hears the Lt. Colonel's chair move and footsteps across the room, but he can't help but feel his breath down his neck as his superior leans over him, staring at his work. Nothing is said for a few moments, then suddenly, the Lt. Colonel is taking Niles' chin in his hand and pulling him to look at him. "Your writing is ugly," he says. "Fix it." His nails dig in a little, and Niles winces a "Yes, sir," before he lets go and goes back over to his desk.

Niles has diligently finished the report, writing even more slowly in hopes of making his handwriting better, before the Lieutenants arrive, yawning and with wet hair. Niles assumes that they've just showered, and wonders why they don't get in trouble when they don't look perfect. He probably just doesn't realize how bad he looks, he reasons. Whatever it is, it must be his fault.

He rises quickly and bows to them, staying low for some time before straightning again. The 2nd Lieutenant sneers and the 1st Lieutenant ignores him completely, moving towards their desks. They're only there for a minute, however, before they're back at Niles. The 1st Lieutenant's holding him by the throat and the 2nd Lieutenant's glaring at him and saying "I thought I told you to get ink and paper before we arrived today, you good for nothing louse. Why isn't it done?"

Niles struggles to breathe, shrinking back from the scolding voice. "I-I was about to go get them-"

"That's not good enough," 2nd Lieutenant Holtcombe barks, and his brother's grip tightens around Niles' neck. "If you're not back in five minutes, you'll be very sorry." 1st Lieutenant Holtcombe releases his grip and Niles bows hurriedly before rushing out of the room.

He makes it to the warehouses in good time, and gathers the ink and paper, cluthing it carefully in his arms before hurrying back towards the office. He's about half-way there, however, when his foot catches on a step and he falls, spilling ink everywhere. Horrified with himself, he scrambles to his feet and back to the warehouses; he has to get back or else he's going to be punished again.

He makes it back to the office in seven minutes, and he knows he's going to be in trouble. When he gets into the office, however, he's surprised to find Brigadier General Garnier inside, talking to the Lieutenants. He instantly bows low, struggling to keep his hold on the ink and paper; he's not sure whether he would get in worse trouble for not bowing properly or spilling the supplies, and so he tries desperately to avoid both. Amazingly, he manages, and hurries to distribute the new ink and paper to his superiors, hoping he has not already in some way upset the Brigadier General.

He's just setting the paper down on the 2nd Lieuteant's desk when the 1st Lieutenant grabs him by the shoulder and turns him to face him. "I thought I told you to be back in five minutes."

"It's been seven," the 2nd Lieutenant adds with a sneer before Niles can respond, then turns back to the Brigadier General. "Sir, the Corporal has been remiss on his duties again."

The Brigadier General's cold eyes turn look at Niles, cruelty burning beneath the facade of apathy. "Very well," he says to the Lieutenants. "Be sure, then, to make sure that he is duly punished.

"Yes sir," the 2nd Lieutenant replies, bowing. When the Brigadier General has left, he makes his way towards Niles, and the Lt. Colonel rises, also, coming closer. All three wear the same look that makes Niles' stomach knot and his heart lurch.

He doesn't want to be punished, he's tried so hard to avoid it. But he also knows that it's his fault, and that he deserves what's coming. And so, in resigned submission, he bows his head and waits for it to come. Maybe tomorrow, he'll be able to do better.
