I'm home sick for the day hoping that my cold will go away in time for elementary tomorrow and the speech contest on Thursday, and I decided to do something maybe marginally productive. Or... something. At any rate, I was bad about posting photos here for most of the last year, so I decided to show off the uchiwa I've made over the past year! Actually, this isn't all the uchiwa I've made, because
yomimashou has changed her favourite for like every group we like, so I've made her like twice as many uchiwa as I've made for myself, but... =___=; Here's my half of the collection, anyway! :D

First up is Chinen! This was the first uchiwa I've made, not counting my rough first attempt two summers ago when I was in Japan on holiday... and therefore it was the most creative. It was originally for the Hey! Say! JUMP 2012 tour in Nagano in August 2012. I'm actually really happy with the heart theme, and
yomimashou has the Yamada and Yabu versions, while
britkit27 has the Keito version. Sadly, the Yamada version will probably never see the light of day again. =____=; But at any rate, I like this one a lot~

Up next is Marius! This one was a bit of an aesthetic hassle since he doesn't have kanji, and I had to space it out with just katakana. But since it was the second one I made, I was still getting creative |D;;
yomimashou has the Kento companion to this, and they were for Summary 201~

Next up is my Yugo ones! Man was the "yu" a bitch XD; I made the "yu" for Bakaleya Summary 2012, but when I got to the Junior Concert in December, I realized that Kishi was also the same Yu, and so before Crea, I made a "go" to go with it. I think they look pretty okay though? Of course at first
yomimashou wanted Jesse (which looks really ugly lol, since Jesse is a lot more characters than "Mari") but then changed her mind and wanted Shintaro, so... heck, we just need Juri, Taiga, and Hokuto and we'll have everyone.

Sou! I made Sou for my little sister for the Sexy Zone 2013 New Year's concert, because Sou is her favourite. It matches Mari and
yomimashou's Kento. So now we just need Fuma and Shori XD;

Last up is Reia. I made this one in a bit of a hurry before Crea, but I think it came out okay. Maybe I'll add more decoration later. And actually, at the time,
yomimashou was afraid of commitment or something, so this is one of a kind, there's no set! XD;
And in case anyone is curious about the process... it takes about 3 hours to make one uchiwa, depending on the complexity. I usually do requests on the back (not pictured) like "do a peace sign!" and stuff, so that takes some time, as well. All the decorations are done in heavy-duty shimmer sticker paper, and I hand cut everything. First, I use photoshop to make a stencil, and print a the kanji or name about 20cm x 25cm (~8in x 10in). Then I cut it out and trace is reversed on the back side of the sticker paper. I only trace the outside of the kanji, and then I trace the negative space on other paper and trace that on the background colour paper. I tape the kanji stencil to the background colour paper and make a general outline for the background. Then I cut all the stickers, and put the negative space onto the kanji and then the kanji onto the background colour. Finally, I stick that onto the uchiwa. :D That takes about an hour and a half, and then the other half of the time is for the background design (which is less nerve wracking and just more time consuming cutting individual hiragana for stuff like "ピースして!")
So... hopefully that was at least somewhat entertaining? I'm pretty proud of them, anyway. ^^; And now, off to feel blah and gross for the rest of the day >__< I try not to be whiny or beg for comments, but... I'm sick and lonely, so if you want to talk to me, I'll be happy... ;A;?

Date: 2013-09-03 08:11 am (UTC)I tried to do uchiwa when I went to Japan last summer but it was sooo ugly xD It's pretty difficult to do in fact, more than I thought ! So I'm always almost stunned when I see what some people can do xD

Date: 2013-09-03 08:20 am (UTC)It's really difficult to do without the right tools and some practice, definitely. Without a stencil it's almost impossible to make it look good, and I also was an art student for two years XD;

Date: 2013-09-03 08:24 am (UTC)In fact, we just took some paper but we didn't have anything, not even an idea of what we wanted to do when we arrived in Japan ... It was a bad idea xDD
By the way, how did you arrive there ? By the JET, University, exchange programs, ... ?

Date: 2013-09-03 08:50 am (UTC)Ahh, yeah, I'd suggest buying your supplies in Japan. In fact, at stores like Tokyu Hands, you can even have the people there die-cut the stickers for you! But I like to do it myself so it's more personal. ^^
I came with the JET Programme. ^^ I'm a teacher.

Date: 2013-09-03 10:01 am (UTC)Go to university in Japan? There are a lot of international programs, so it's definitely possible ^^ Good luck!

Date: 2013-09-03 10:34 am (UTC)Yeah ! I still have two of them but, I don't think i'll use them the next time, useless I find the way to cut them properly.
Yeah, I found a perfect one but I just have to work hard ^^'Thank you ~v

I am curious about what kinds of things you see on uchiwa--various boys mention them from time to time so I think they do really read them. :)

Date: 2013-09-03 09:22 am (UTC)You can see some really specific requests XD It's pretty funny. For example, people often ask Chinen to do a fishing motion, since he likes Ohno, and I know there are a few fans who have banana uchiwas for Kenty. Lots of people just have a name kanji and/or キスして/ピースして/指さして/バンして, etc XD I prefer to have a name because I just want to show my support for them... it's not so much about getting them to notice me or do something special for me, though I am always happy when someone does notice me.

Date: 2013-09-03 01:26 pm (UTC)Oh, it would be so fun to go to a JE concert... I think I'd do... "K" in English letters with a heart and then キスしてon the back. ♥
And then get a boy to come with me and carry it so Kenty would get really excited. XDDD

Date: 2013-09-03 01:32 pm (UTC)It is fun! Though, I'd personally be wary of using English letters since they have to be able to pick it out and know it's for them amongst a sea of thousands of uchiwas, and even someone who likes English like Kento still doesn't speak it as a first language. But I'm sure he'd be thrilled to have more gaijin love |D Since he loves English and all.
Ahaha! That's actually the key to getting Kento's love. I'm working on getting my gay guy friend to come but he's hesitant for some reason |D;

Date: 2013-09-03 01:38 pm (UTC)JE is really aimed more at women (gay, straight, and everything in between) than gay men but I'm sure there is plenty for them to enjoy, too.
Bananas! I didn't know! Of course, my thoughts are inappropriate but I don't know if there is the same association in Japan.
Kentooooooo! Does he love English? That's cute! Do they all test their conversation skills on Marius? Did you watch Kenty going into raptures over France? And then Sou loving on Harry Potter?
no subject
Date: 2013-09-03 01:43 pm (UTC)Um. There is definitely the same association, don't worry. As if Kenty couldn't be any more, um, flamboyant.
He does, he thinks he's really good at it but he's not. XD If you watch the Vegas footage on One Sexy Zone and the New York footage on real Sexy!!/Bad Boys, you can see him try to use it. He's tried to talk to Marius, too (one instance I can think of offhand is in the Sexy Zone making) and Marius like... can't even tell what he's trying to say |D;;; But yes. XD Oh Kenty. Sou is adorable though!

Date: 2013-09-03 01:50 pm (UTC)I need to watch all those things~~ ♥ I'm working my way through the JE butais right now. What do you think of Tackey? I like him as a producer but I'm very underwhelmed with him as a singer/dancer/performer. In the Takizawa Kabuki from 2010, Yara just PWNS him every time he's on stage. As do quite a few of the other juniors...
no subject
Date: 2013-09-03 11:45 pm (UTC)Yeah, I noticed XD I'm not much of a butai person myself, though I am going to see Dream Boys. Tackey... I mostly feel sorry for him. I think that he's really talented at what he does in terms of organization and having an idea that he pulls together through various aspects of performing/costuming/music, etc, and I honestly don't think he's a worse performer than most Johnny's of his age bracket, but... there's always the insecurity looming there that makes me just feel bad for him. I don't know if you know his whole history? But his dad left his family when he was a kid and he took it really hard, and since then it seems like he just sort of really wants to be loved and has abandonment issues, and I think he makes it hard on himself both in a personal and professional setting.
