wearenotaskitz for her birthday! Happy birthday!
The stars and the moon were unusually bright over the temple upon whose steps they sat, the location of that fateful first meeting so many, many years ago, giving the illusion of a glow around the two white-uniformed figures seated there. The tournament was long over and the rest of the team was probably off celebrating, but after they were congratulated and photographed and interviewed and mobbed by the masses, after all the duties of the Campion and Second Place had been fulfilled, Peco and Smile had broken away and had somehow ended up here, where it had all began, away from the crowds and the noise and the watching eyes, beneath the night sky.
They sat in contented silence for a while, neither looking at the other but not pointedly looking away, either. It was a comfortable sort of atmosphere, the sort that might lull one to sleep, especially on such a warm pleasant evening, but somehow, both were wide awake, deep in thought. Their hands played idly to match the movement of their minds-- Smile fiddled with his rubik's cube, Peco flipped his paddle over and over and over in his hands, examining the rubber on both sides. Both were content just to be away from everything that was "tournament," just to be together.
Neither was sure how much time had passed, but suddenly Peco set his paddle aside and grinned at Smile, who gazed back at him. His face displayed little beyond perfect apathy, but Peco knew him better than that and laughed softly. He watched as Smile went back to the rubik's cube, watched the nimbleness of his fingers, the never-ceasing movement of the changing colours, captivated, unable to look away. Something about Smile had always captivated him, ever since that first moment of that first day when his first introduced Smile to table tennis, but he had never really thought about it before and he wasn't prepared to think about it now. Instead, he decided, as he often did, that silence was overrated, and that it was about time he broke it. "Hey. Thanks."
Smile looked up at him, inquiry playing fleetingly across his features. "Why's that?"
Peco chuckled again, leaning over to rest his head on Smile's shoulder with a pleased smile. "For smiling for me."
Smile blinked for a moment, then looked away, back to the cube. In the moonlight, Peco thought he could just maybe make out a faint blush on Smile's cheeks, but it might have been a trick of the light.
Silence returned, but Peco was content for the time being to watch Smile and the rhythmic movement of his fingers on the rubik's cube. Being with smile had always had a calming effect on him, had always been enough to make him happy, been enough to make him smile. And so smile he did, breathing in Smile's inconspicuous but somehow comforting scent, feeling distinctly more intimate alone together in the night.
But, of course, being who he was, he couldn't be entirely silent for long, and he rolled his head back, looking at the sky. "The moon looks especially nice tonight. Brighter, or something. Seems like it's happy." He sat up to find Smile already looking back at him, and grinned sheepishly.
After a moment, Smile set his cube aside and looked up at the sky for a moment before turning back to Peco. "But no matter how brightly the moon shines, the stars will always shine brighter."
Peco blinked, furrowing his brow. "Why's that?"
"The stars give off their own light, they shine on their own. They can stand on their own, without relying on anyone else," Smile replied matter-of-factly. "The moon can only reflect the sun's light. It never gives off its own."
Peco shook his head, half grinning. He was beginning to feel strangely warm and bubbly on the inside, like being drunk but with more meaning. "But I bet the stars would get really lonely in the sky without the moon there."
Smile looked like he didn't know what to say, but it didn't really matter, because in the next moment, Peco leaned in and, without another moment of hesitation, kissed him.
He didn't like to spread it around, but Peco had never kissed before, not really. He had expected it to be okay, wet and a little sloppy and fairly quick, and maybe just any old kiss would have been. But kissing Smile... that was different. Kissing Smile was like the happy feeling and the warm-bubbly only more intense, and more good, and he didn't want it to be over. But all too soon, he had to breathe, and they were pulling apart, all swollen lips and pink cheeks. Just in the moment, in the moonlight, it seemed to Peco that Smile was almost glowing, radiant and beautiful as he had always been but Peco had somehow failed to notice. It made him want to kiss Smile again, but something told him to wait, because Smile was looking at him in the most peculiar fashion, and Peco had the feeling that something was going to happen in the next instant, but he wasn't sure what.
And then is happened: Smile smiled at him. Glowing bright against the night sky, he smiled at Peco, and suddenly, Peco was overwhelmed with the bubbly feeling and he couldn't help but grin stupidly right back at him. He was about to say something, something idiotic, no doubt, but before he could, Smile opened his mouth to speak, and Peco was immediately silent, wanting to prolong this moment of pure joy for as long as possible.
Smile hesitated, gazing up at the sky for a moment before meeting Peco's eyes once again. "I think that the night sky is best when the stars and the moon shine together." And with that, he leaned in and kissed Peco again.
Some time later, as the two boys descended the long flight of steps hand in hand, it seemed, no matter how impossible, that the stars and the moon shone just a little bit brighter.
