Well, V is coming today, which is enough of a celebration for me, but for everyone else, I wrote a little something!
Also, a poll question: Can you see Gojyo calling Hakkai "baby"? Please leave me an answer if you would, it's something I see in fandom half the time, and I've always been on the fence about it. XD;
But now. On to the fic.
Title: Sweet Dreams
Disclaimer: They're Minekura-sensei's, a fact for which I am glad XD;
Rating: PG
Warnings: BL, fluff, minor angst and Gojyo says "damn" once...
Author's note: I just wanted to write a cute little fluff for 85 day... even though this is more 58ish. Oh well! XD; Nothing too hardcore, I just wanted something to make the reader's teeth rot without leaving a sticky aftertaste!
When Hakkai wakes up, shaking, in the middle of the night, Gojyo is awake, too, is always awake when Hakkai has nightmares. He knows that when Hakkai wakes with bad dreams (or perhaps they're memories, Gojyo never knows), he has a tendency to slide out of bed and go sit in the windowsill with his knees hugged to his chest and not return to bed, and pretend like nothing out of the ordinary has happened in the morning. Gojyo plays along because it's what Hakkai wants: he pretends to sleep when Hakkai gets up, when Hakkai leaves, but once Hakkai is gone, the bed feels too cold, and so he feigns sleep for the rest of the night too and pretends to wake up well rested when he's spent the last four hours knotted in worry. It breaks him on the inside to see Hakkai push away, hide inside himself, all alone, it kills him that Hakkai refuses to come to him for help. But things smooth out in the morning, they always do, and so Gojyo continues to play along like nothing is wrong at all.
But tonight, Gojyo can feel Hakkai stirring again, his body shaking only as it does when he's really terrified, and Gojyo can practically feel his terror. He hates this feeling, he hates knowing, but what choice does he have? Hakkai doesn't want him to know, and he doesn't want to go against what Hakkai wants. He loves Hakkai, and that means he has to pretend--right?
But then that old memory flashes to the front of his mind again, the sight of that bloody and yet still beautiful body, limp in the rain, and those bright green eyes that spoke so clearly: "I want to die." The memory of his own comes attached to a realization, and Gojyo gets a little shiver of his own at the thought of how stupid he had been. But that's a thought for later, because right now, Gojyo has other, far more important matters at hand.
Hakkai is almost writhing now, his arms tight around his middle section, his eyes squeezed shut as he shudders and murmurs frantically in his sleep, and Gojyo doesn't waste any more time. Wrapping his arms around the struggling body, he pulls Hakkai close, smothering his struggles and pressing a kiss to the back of his neck, whispering, "'Kai, wake up." Somehow, he has to protect Hakkai from the things he can't fight physically, possibly the only thing from which Hakkai will ever need protecting.
He doesn't know what he's going to do if Hakkai refuses to wake; he doesn't want to shake him or anything of the sort to rouse him for fear that it will only add to Hakkai's nightmares, but, of course, Gojyo is lucky and Hakkai wakes with a start, eyes wide, staring back into Gojyo's. He is silent for a moment besides his heavy breathing, shallow pants which slowly become deeper swallows of air, looking into Gojyo's eyes before he finally speaks, his voice softer than usual, perhaps weaker, Gojyo can't decide. "...Gojyo...?"
Gojyo places a kiss on his lips and pulls him closer, and Hakkai's body feels almost fragile in his arms. "Don't worry," he murmurs into Hakkai's hair, soothingly, calmly, "I'm here to protect you."
He feels Hakkai's muscles begin to relax in his arms as Hakkai finally lets go and rests his head against Gojyo's chest, but he can tell, Hakkai isn't satisfied with this answer. Hakkai, he knows, has to ease into these things like a warm bath, he can't readily accept "I care about you or "I love you" or "I'm staying with you tonight," but Gojyo is persistent enough that Hakkai always finally give up and opens up the protective barrier he always keeps around himself just a little more, and more than any other victory, Gojyo takes pride in this one, because whether Hakkai wants him to or not, Gojyo can tell when Hakkai is happy, and he likes to make Hakkai happy.
But now, Hakkai is still eying the water suspiciously, and so Gojyo strokes his hair for a moment in silence, contemplating the best plan of action before deciding on the simplest choice there is: the truth. Pressing another kiss to Hakkai's forehead, Gojyo draws back just enough to look into his eyes as he says, "I love you."
Gojyo knows these three words always daunt Hakkai, but this time, Hakkai stares back at him for a moment before a tiny smile appears on his lips, a real smile, and he moves closer in Gojyo's embrace, shutting his eyes. "You're so obstinate, Gojyo. Always doing exactly what I don't want."
Gojyo grins, a warm feeling bubbling inside him that only Hakkai could produce. He has won. "Damn straight, baby. That's why you love me."
"Touche," Hakkai replies softly, and Gojyo can already feel him drifting back to sleep as his body relaxes and his breaths grow even. Triumphant, he holds Hakkai a little tighter still before closing his eyes, too. Before he drifts off, though, he presses his lips to Hakkai's ear, feeling warm and contented.
"Sweet dreams."

Date: 2008-08-07 05:43 pm (UTC)I like this! I have no idea who the characters are but the writing is very good. I'm right there in the moment.
Do you want me to send you something of mine? (warning: very very depressing. Like, insanely depressing.)
